Preparing for a wildfire
Get together with family members to talk about what needs to get done. Make sure everyone knows where to meet and who to call in case you get seperated from one another. Make plans to care for your pet(s) in case of evacuation. If you have time, get your parents to face their car the direction of the escape, roll up all windows, lock all doors, and leave the keys in the ignition. In the house, remove all lightweight curtains, move all flammable furniture to the center of your home, away from doors and windows, close and lock all doors and windows tightly, turn all lights on so they can be seen through clouds of smoke, and keep the radio and tv on for fire alerts. If advised to evacuate, do so immediatly. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, jacket, and keep a rag or hankerchief on you for face protection over smoke. Gather emergancy supplies, lock your house, tell someone when and where you're going. Watch for wind speed changes. Be sure to have a parent or trusted adult with you at all times. If you have any valuable items you can't live without, place them in the center of the car. Keep a handheld garage door opener or house key on you for when the evacuation ends and you are safe to go back home.
